Forms of Life — Morph

Esentli

Esentlis are a Greed Zaergar morph, and one of the most diffused ones. They usually show a distinct, keen intelligence, and they represent the morph that you would most likely interact with if you ever dive into the submerged economic world of the Hollowdark. I spent three months tracking the movements of three Esentlis, hiding in the shadows, lockpicking their personal chambers, and finally openly interacting with one of the three, to extract even more knowledge. Once I offered him a round at one of the pleasure houses managed by Nihilists, the influx of the substances made him share more than I ever hoped about their nature.

Esentlis Physiology

Most of Esentlis’ body is composed of a coalesced substance, clearly Mayhem-driven. This substance, they call Ulturum, carries out most of their biological functions: on the outside, it behaves like a solid, and the harder and faster you push against it, the harder it becomes. The exposed parts that look like bones from the outside are indeed made of a bone-like material, serving as a harder protective layer for the Ulturum flowing inside.

At rest, the Ulturum keeps a slow, heavy motion beneath the shell, and an Esentli holds steady command of it. The clearest show of this control is the crest along the back, a ridge of Ulturum the creature raises when it wants height, threat, or balance, and lets fall flat once it is done. Watch one long enough, and you see the crest stiffen from a soft swell into a hard, edged ridge in the space of a breath, then soften again, all at the creature's own choosing. That same command runs further than display. Pushed hard from outside, or set rigid from within, the Ulturum gains true structural solidity, firm enough to carry the creature's full weight.

Frame and Carriage

The plates ride the shoulders, spine, arms, and the long ridge of the lower column, and they thicken wherever an Esentli has taken blows. The thickest, most battered shells belong to the ones who have done their own fighting or spent time being hunted, while the clerks of the deep counting-houses keep a thin, smooth shell from a life spent behind other people's muscle. Beneath the plates, the body stays lean and top-heavy, the bulk gathered high and the lower column tapering into the segment they can shed at will.

The Shed Sentinel

An Esentli can leave part of themselves behind. They shed their lower column of Ulturum and set it as a guard over a hoard or a doorway, and the shed mass keeps a dull awareness, driven by peripheral brains that allow it to move against anything that comes too near. Severed from the body, it slackens over several days, settling and thinning until nothing remains to stand watch.

A Mind in Many Places

An Esentli thinks with more than one brain. Those peripheral brains sit as dense knots of tissue through the trunk and the lower column, the largest behind the upper plates, and they share the load of awareness, so a strike to the head leaves the rest of the mind awake and able. It is why a shed lower column can keep its watch at all, and I judge it the source of how coolly an Esentli sits across a table from you, since one part of them holds your eye while another counts the exits and a third tallies what your visit is worth.

Breath and Sustenance

Like every Zaergar morph, an Esentli breathes only with the help of the Yokinar fungus, which colonizes the breathing passages and conditions the close, fouled air of the Hollowdark into something their body can use. This is the quiet leash on the whole morph, and a careful Esentli keeps their colony fed and healthy as a first charge on their attention. They take their nourishment from the fungal mats and mineral-rich slurries of the deep galleries, drawing from the same beds the minerals their plates demand, so that a well-fed Esentli lays down denser, paler shell across a single season.

Senses

Their pale, lidless eyes serve them poorly in open light and superbly in the dark, sensing warmth and the faint glow of Luminal Shards where a surface visitor would need a lamp. They taste the air through fine pits along the forelimbs. This is how an Esentli weighs coin, metal, and the sweat of a nervous trading partner before a single word is exchanged. Keep this in mind: if you lie to an Esentli in the close quarters of a deal, they will probably spot it.

Habitat and Distribution

You can find Esentlis wherever value changes hands underground, which puts most of them in the First Stratum of the Hollowdark, the cool, humid band that sits closest to the surface. This is the layer the Greed Zaergarai have made their own, threaded with the banking houses, smuggling routes, and safehouses they keep clear of any surface authority, and the Esentlis are the morph you will deal with across the greater part of it, most often as the managers who keep it turning. In the three citadel districts I worked, the counting-rooms outnumbered the shrines dedicated to Natil’Dagg, the Greed Zaergar Lord, several times over, which tells you plainly where their attention sits.

Their hold loosens as you descend. The deeper strata belong to morphs better suited to heat, pressure, and open conflict, so the Esentlis keep to the trafficked upper reaches where ledgers, debts, and contraband give them something to manage. Like all Zaergarai, they carry the Yokinar fungus that lets them draw breath in the Hollowdark air, which ties them to the cultivated tunnels and binds their range to the places that fungus survives. An Esentli far from a tended Yokinar bed is an Esentli on a short clock, and they account for it in their planning beside every shipment and debt.

They drift toward the surface more readily than their kin, surfacing through the mining towns and depots where Hollowdark goods meet surface coin. Wherever a route carries silver, contraband, or a debt worth collecting, expect an Esentli to be working one end of it, usually the end that profits.

Habits and Conduct

Everything an Esentli does runs through the logic of exchange. They try to find leverage to strike a bargain before they look for danger, they price a favor before they grant it, and they keep meticulous records of who owes what to whom. Among themselves, standing scales with holdings: an Esentli's voice in any gathering carries exactly as far as their reserves and the debts owed to them, and the whole morph organizes around this single measure so completely that I came to treat their account-books as the truest map of the Greed society.

Most Esentlis run ventures owned by more powerful and rich Greed morphs. They sit as the manager who keeps a counting-house, a smuggling line, or a vault turning for an owner content to stay a name on a ledger, and they draw their standing from how well the operation profits under their hand. For the work that calls for force they lean on the Semtu, the dullest of the Greed morphs and the most biddable, and for the work that calls for a face on the surface or a hand they can spend, they take on Elegorians who sign up for the pay. This puts a single Esentli at the center of a web of muscle and hired labor far larger than their own holdings would suggest. And a few renowned Esentlis individuals actually leverage this against other powerful Zaergarai, enhancing their social status.

A debt, to them, sits closer to a sacred bond than to a simple transaction, and it is the one line of devotion I saw them hold to completely. They will honor an agreement long past the point where breaking it would profit them, because a reputation for settling cleanly is the asset that underwrites every other deal, and an Esentli known to break faith loses access to the whole web of credit that lets the morph function. This cuts both ways: a bargain struck plainly will hold, and a bargain you break will follow you through every counting-room in the stratum.

Their appetites give them away. The Esentlis I tracked moved with real regularity through the pleasure houses and vision dens the Nihilists keep in the upper Hollowdark, and it was there, with the substances moving through him, that my own contact loosened enough to tell me what sober calculation would have kept locked. Information is the one commodity they prize beside coin, which makes them excellent sources and dangerous ones in equal measure: an Esentli will trade you a secret gladly, and will sell yours just as gladly the moment the price climbs high enough.

How to Interact With

Of all the Zaergar morphs, the Esentli is the one a surface traveler stands the best chance of dealing with and walking away whole, because to an Esentli, a living trading partner is worth far more than a corpse, and they treat your survival as a matter of arithmetic. Treat them as the sharp, patient, and well-armed merchants they are: come with something they want, state your terms plainly, and let them set their price. Vagueness reads to them as either weakness or deceit, and both raise your cost.

Honor whatever you agree to, down to the last figure. An Esentli will remember a clean dealing, extend you credit on the next one, and pass word of a reliable partner through the counting-rooms with surprising speed. The reverse holds with equal force: cheat one, and you have cheated the network, and the network collects through every Esentli, every Semtu set on your trail, and every Elegorian on their payroll you meet from that day forward. If you carry a useful secret, you hold real value to an Esentli, but know that the moment you sell it, they will not hesitate to resell it to a higher bidder. If they learn you hold an interesting secret you refuse to sell, they may resort to violence to pry it from you. Even then, they would leave you alive and a bunch of coins, preserving their honor by turning the exchange into a transaction.

Keep clear of their hoards. An Esentli guards stored wealth with a shed portion of their own body, a dull and watchful mass that moves against anything that comes too near, and it will hold a vault or a doorway long after its owner has walked away. Treat a guarded chamber as occupied, make your dealings in the open rooms they offer, and you will find the Esentli a reliable, if expensive, door into the economic underworld of the Hollowdark.
